The excavation works in the south pit for Westfield Hamburg Überseequartier have been successfully completed

A hole with a surface area of 45,000 m and a depth of up to 14 m: the southern construction pit for Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier. More than one million tonnes of earth (as heavy as 100 Eiffel Towers) were excavated and removed seamlessly in 35 months. This logistical masterpiece required complex processes.

Thanks to the location by the River Elbe, part of the excavated soil could be transported by ship. The deployed ships saved 8,000 truckloads and thus significantly relieved road traffic in and around HafenCity.

The perimetrical walls have been secured with more than 600 anchors and internal stiffeners. Our team has also strengthened the pit with 3,400 uplift and bored piles so it can carry either the future buildings of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier and/or protect them against uplift movements.

More than 60% of the raft as well as columns and part of the ceiling above -3 level have already been constructed thanks to the Lean Construction Management Method, which enables particularly efficient working.
