Great news from the construction site of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier: 97 per cent of the excavation is finished.
Since October 2017 more than 475,000 cubic metres of soil, including parts of the foundations of the old gas plant that used to stand on the plot, have been excavated. A further 15,000 cubic metres of soil have still to be moved to complete the work. Some parts of the remaining excavation may release odours. We ask for your understanding. We are doing our utmost to keep the nuisance to a minimum. The excavated areas are covered with 50 cubic metres of sand during the weekends. With a daily capacity of 400 cubic metres, this means that on Fridays the actual amount of soil and sand that has to be moved is 450 cubic metres.
Almost one million tonnes of soil will be excavated in total. The excavated material weighs about as much as 100 Eiffel Towers and could fill the great hall of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg over 12 times. Eighty per cent of this mass is being carted off in 32,000 truckloads. The remaining 20 per cent is being transported by 18 ships to take pressure off the roads. Thus mean 8,000 fewer truckloads are needed.
The work below the support structure will be finished around the middle of August. Till about end of September 2019 the excavating at the southern construction field will be finalised.
