Just a few days ago, #UNUEBERSEEBAR, the longest curated work of art in northern Germany, successfully celebrated its premiere at the construction fence of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier with 385 meters. On May 17, Hamburger Abendblatt gave 20 readers the opportunity to take a look behind the artfully designed barriers of Europe’s largest inner-city construction site as part of an exclusive guided tour. The extraordinary tour was rounded off by a panel discussion in the showroom of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier and culinary highlights from Hobenköök in Oberhafen.
What will open at the end of 2023 can be glimpsed by looking through and over the construction fence of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier. Construction work is in full swing on the new quarter with its attractive cultural and leisure facilities, innovative shopping and entertainment concepts, and modern office workplaces, hotels and apartments directly on the banks of the river Elbe in the heart of HafenCity. Although it is not normally possible for unauthorized persons to walk across a construction site, there was now an exception for 20 readers of Hamburger Abendblatt: equipped with the construction clothing required for safety reasons, they were given an exclusive tour of the 67,000-square-meter site, which will contain 14 buildings and plenty of space for strolling.
In addition to the construction site tour, guests were able to attend a panel discussion in the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier showroom at Sumatrakontor, located opposite the construction site. The panel discussion on the topic of “Opportunities and Risks of Überseequartier – Networking with the City and How to Profit Together” was attended by Brigitte Engler, Managing Director of City Management Hamburg, Dirk Hünerbein, Director of Development Austria & Germany at Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, and Matthias Iken, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Hamburger Abendblatt.
The guests not only gained further insights and background information on the showcase project, but also learned a great deal about the importance of the future-oriented mixed-use quarter for HafenCity and the whole of Hamburg. “There is no comparable quarter in Europe: the absolute mix of uses for living, working and leisure for young and old as well as for locals and tourists, coupled with the highest standards in the areas of digital networking and sustainability, reflect our vision of modern urbanity and a vibrant piece of the city,” summarizes Dirk Hünerbein. The varied evening was catered by the neighboring Hobenköök, which provided finger food and drinks.
